VAT Registration Rules in the UK

You must register for VAT if your VAT-taxable turnover exceeds the statutory threshold of £90,000 (effective from 1 April 2024) in any rolling 12-month period, or if you expect your turnover to exceed £90,000 in the next 30 days alone. Businesses below the threshold can also register voluntarily to reclaim input VAT on business purchases.

Choosing the Right VAT Scheme

Scheme How It Works Best Suited For
Standard VAT Scheme Pay VAT on invoices issued; reclaim VAT on business purchase invoices received. Businesses with significant allowable VAT-bearing purchases and standard payment terms.
Cash Accounting Scheme Only pay VAT when customers actually pay you; reclaim VAT when you pay suppliers. Businesses where clients pay on 30–60 day terms, protecting cashflow against bad debts.
Flat Rate Scheme Pay a fixed percentage of gross turnover to HMRC; keep difference between charged VAT. Eligible businesses with turnover under £150,000 and low direct cost of goods.
